Personality

The Scholar-Contemplative

One of the most intellectually accomplished men ever to occupy the papacy. His formation in Catholic academic traditions shaped a mind of extraordinary precision and depth.

The Gentle Teacher

Despite his reputation as a "Rottweiler," those who knew him consistently describe a gentle, shy, and kindly man. He taught as a grandfather teaches — with love for the subject.

The Musician and Lover of Beauty

An accomplished pianist, especially of Mozart and Bach. His aesthetic sensibility governed his theology of liturgy and his understanding of beauty as a path to God.

The Augustinian

Like Augustine, he was acutely aware of the tension between the City of God and the City of Man, of the beauty of creation and the tragedy of sin.

The Man of Prayer and Silence

He maintained a rigorous schedule of prayer, reading, and study. His resignation was motivated by the recognition that his energies were no longer sufficient.

The Truth-Teller

He never shied from difficult truths. He believed that charity without truth becomes sentimentality, and truth without charity becomes ideology.

Spirituality

Benedict XVI's spirituality was deeply liturgical and contemplative. A theologian of worship whose prayer life centered on the Eucharist, the Divine Office, and silent adoration. His spirituality was Augustinian in its intellectual love of God, Benedictine in its liturgical rhythm, and Bavarian in its popular Catholic warmth. He understood the priesthood and the papacy above all as service at the altar.
